A Chartered Building Services Consultancy, Working From Newmarket Since 2015.
A small, chartered MEP practice with a deliberate focus. Mechanical, electrical and public health engineering for buildings that need to perform.
A Small Practice With Deliberate Focus.
Sharman Grimwade was founded in 2015 by Jeremy Sharman and Tim Grimwade, as a chartered building services consultancy. The intention from the outset was a smaller, more focused practice where the directors stay close to every project from feasibility through to handover.
Jeremy and Tim both began their engineering careers under the guidance of Roger Parker, who led a respected Cambridge consultancy for more than twenty years. His philosophy of robust simplicity continues to shape our approach today: clear, effective engineering without unnecessary complexity. The simplest system that meets the brief is almost always the right one, easier to commission, easier to maintain, and easier for the people who use the building to understand.
The practice has grown steadily, both in team and in the scale of the work. We now have a team of engineers covering all three services in-house, with experience spanning laboratories and biomedical research facilities, schools and higher education, commercial offices, healthcare, industrial and manufacturing environments, residential and large domestic properties, sports and leisure, accommodation developments, and listed buildings and heritage projects. University of Cambridge, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Babraham Research Campus, The Perse School and Ministry of Defence are among the clients we have delivered for.
Robust Simplicity, Every Time.
The simplest design that meets the brief tends to be the best one. It uses less embodied carbon, costs less to install, performs more reliably in use and is easier for the building operator to maintain over time. Complexity should earn its place.
In practice this means sizing systems honestly around how the building will actually be used, rather than oversizing for safety. It means designing the controls strategy at the same time as the kit, not after the fact. It means staying close to the project through commissioning so what we designed is what gets installed.
It is also why sustainability is not a separate service line at Sharman Grimwade. Every design decision has an energy, carbon and cost consequence, so the lowest-carbon, lowest-running-cost outcome is what the work is for. Net zero strategies, EPC ratings and heat pump design run through every project, not just the ones with a sustainability brief.
The Two Founders, Still On Every Project.
Jeremy Sharman
Co-founded Sharman Grimwade in 2015, Jeremy has over 20 years’ experience in building services engineering and leads the mechanical and public health side of the practice. He remains principal engineer on many of the firm’s projects, bringing particular expertise in practical, efficient building services design and the integration of low-carbon technologies.
Tim Grimwade
Co-founded Sharman Grimwade in 2015, Tim has over 20 years’ experience in electrical building services engineering and leads the electrical side of the practice. He remains closely involved in project design and delivery, bringing a methodical approach to electrical engineering with particular expertise and interest in lighting design.
